Dave Antrobus is a self-described ‘tech geek’. Tell us a bit about what you do.

I’m the Technology Director and Co-founder of Fresh Thinking Group (FTG), an independent capital investment firm.. Fresh Thinking Group acquires and funds distressed companies, start-ups, and businesses looking to develop their growth strategies. Each of our acquisitions and partner companies benefit from our capital injections, R&D, and expertise. I’m responsible for plotting each company’s technical direction, advising on software solutions, and coordinating teams based on appropriate technologies and team strengths.

Over the last fourteen years, I have worked as a software engineer, developing e-commerce and technology solutions for brands like Matalan, SimplyBe, and Google. I also mentor development teams of all sizes, coaching them to improve collaborative practices. I aim to curate environments in which developers can advance their skills and achieve the best outcomes possible.

The idea for Fresh Thinking Group was born out of previous enterprises that I founded with my business partner Scott Dylan. We share an interest in logistics and launched our first company Caribou many years ago. Caribou works with major industry carriers, including Royal Mail, Amazon Logistics, and DPD, to offer seamless, global delivery services.

Following the launch of Caribou, Scott and I saw a further gap in the market for customer-focused solutions in the logistics sector. We launched V Software to fill this gap. Once we built the initial solution for one company, we realised that the software would benefit others, too. We now licence the platform as a SaaS model for all companies in the logistics sector. Caribou’s rates can save customers up to 40% and the software can intelligently route parcels through the optimum delivery network, ultimately saving the customer more money.

In 2018, Scott and I channelled our experience from Caribou and V Software into the launch of Fresh Thinking and its subsidiary groups, Orb, Inc & Co, and Inc & Co Property. Our combined skills in logistics, software, investment, and business development put us in a strong position to launch an enterprise through which we could re-strategise clients’ business frameworks across various industries. Since launching FTG, we have had the satisfaction of working with some fantastic companies and landscaping their business models to achieve growth and return on investment.

With new acquisitions in the pipelines, we look forward to further expanding our portfolio of business transformations. What’s your favorite thing about your chosen profession?

For me, one of the best things about acquiring multiple businesses is that we can work with a wide range of experts and pour a huge amount of brain power into every idea, initiative, and business plan. My best business and software ideas usually occur to me late in the evening. Not only can I brainstorm these ideas with my business partners to decide whether there’s any value in them, but I can also seek input from our teams at Cuhu, Skylab, and Neon. Running ideas past experts from our business acquisitions offers a great sense check, and their thoughts are always invaluable.

What keys to being productive can you share with us?

Caffeine is my source of productivity – my work is powered by dark chocolate. Caffeine aside, I use JIRA to keep on task, PhpStorm to improve development productivity, and Slack for our internal communications.

I’m also completing my certification in Scrum, which is fantastic for productivity. The heuristic approach is ideal for managing development queues and allows FTG to overcome adaptable problems efficiently. I hold daily Sprint Planning Meetings and Sprint Retrospectives to ensure that our teams take feedback on board at every stage of our development processes.

Tell us one long-term goal in your career.

My main goal is to expand FTG’s and Inc & Co’s portfolios with more entrepreneurial, industry-specific businesses that offer vital support and guidance for other companies in our shared collectives. Over the last couple of years, Fresh Thinking Group and Inc & Co have already acquired and partnered with numerous companies. While FTG has grown and strengthened the mobile-development app agency Cuhu, on-demand laundry service Laundrapp, and national logistics company GLB Transport, Inc & Co has rejuvenated numerous creative agencies and firms such as Brass, Neon, Skylab, and has recently acquired the data-specialist firm MyLife Digital.

Over the years, I’ve come to realise the growing importance of keeping up to date with technology trends and, as a result, prioritising self-development. Technology trends are constantly evolving, so it’s important to make sure you don’t lose touch with current coding techniques. Tech Directors have a high level of responsibility and end up in lots of meetings, but finding time to keep up-to-date with software practices and certifications is essential.

For example, we’re currently stepping up our work with different front-end frameworks, such as React and Vue.js. We’ve found that we can add a huge amount of value to each of our acquisitions’ projects by applying these frameworks.

What advice would you give to others aspiring to succeed in your field?

Plan, plan, plan. The software industry is incredibly fast-moving and, at times, difficult to keep up with. You can’t have too many online lists to keep organised – I recommend JIRA – but I can usually be found walking around with a notepad too!

Also, I can’t overstate the importance of investing in staff. We want to upskill our teams and encourage our employees to stay with us long-term, so we offer the best training available, from demos and code reviews to courses and development conferences like Laracon (the largest annual Laravel event).

What are your favourite things to do outside of work?

After work, I enjoy finishing the day with a session at the gym and catching up with the latest tech news before bed. I also enjoy windsurfing, 3D printing, and experimenting with Raspberry Pi microcomputers.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I’d tell myself to plan early to manage time effectively and improve productivity. This is the one skill that we didn’t cover on my Computer Science degree. Once I’d grasped how to plan projects and forecast developments, my processes became much smoother and I was able to focus on the parts of my businesses that I really enjoy, like development and strategy.

1) Take Time Out to Avoid Burnout

When you find yourself in a business crisis, you might feel inclined to ditch all of your personal plans and commit every waking hour to fixing the problem. This can indeed be effective if you have a sure-fire solution that you can implement immediately. However, more often than not, you’ll need to make some longer-term changes to your business. In this case, working on the problem 24/7 will lead to extreme stress and burnout. Plus, expecting your team to also neglect themselves in favour of working serious overtime will lead to resentment and further problems. Taking the time to recharge is more important than you might think when it comes to problem-solving.

2) But Do Take Action as Soon as Possible

Though it’s important to avoid burnout, it’s not a good idea to sit on the problem – ignoring the issue will only make it worse. No matter how difficult the situation, the sooner you can draw up a resolution plan the better. Meet with your most trusted colleagues and draw up a plan of action to reduce your stress and get the problem sorted. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from colleagues or mentors; identifying who can be of most help is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness.

3) Update Your Clients/Customers

Once you’ve consulted your colleagues and mentors, it’s time to update your clients/customers. It’s important not to overlook the people who have invested their time and money into supporting you. Make sure you get in touch with these people and remain transparent about your situation. They should respect you for this and may even offer testimonials or referrals to help you to get back on track.

4) Break Down Big Workloads into Achievable Tasks

Often, the work that you need to undertake to solve a business crisis can seem like a huge, looming, maybe even unattainable task. In this case, it can be helpful to break the task down into small components that are easier to achieve. You might even be able to share these mini tasks between your team to spread the load. It can also be motivating to celebrate each small achievement. Promising yourself and your staff incentives at each milestone can be particularly motivating, whether you’ll be buying a small cake platter or throwing a work party.

5) Remember Why You’re Doing This

When your motivation starts to slide, remember why you’re running your business. Focus on your achievements, your goals, and the people that you would let down if you gave up. When you think about the reasons to keep going, you should find your motivation improving again. If it helps, you could even write down your ambitions and successes as reminders to motivate you through the challenging times.

6) Avoid Imagining Negative Scenarios

When things start to turn south, it’s easy to imagine every possible negative scenario – even those that are unlikely to happen. In the worst case, if one of these scenarios does happen, you’ve had to experience it twice: once in your mind and once in real life. Instead, make a conscious effort to focus on the facts. Make a note of exactly what has happened and the options that you have to fix the problem. Think about the opportunities that could arise from this challenge and actually benefit your business. Where possible, search for the positives and capitalise on these.

7) Visualise Success

While playing out negative scenarios in your mind is never helpful, visualising success can have the opposite effect. Many athletes and performers recommend this – picturing yourself accomplishing your goals can keep you motivated and put you in the best frame of mind to achieve success.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how businesses operate in the short-term with most professionals potentially working from home in the long-term.  Here, tech entrepreneur Dave Antrobus explores the top 5 reasons why returning to an office after COVID-19 is important. 1)    Collaboration

Working remotely means you are unable to gain the nuances of office collaboration, from overhearing conversations that may improve your company or client knowledge to missing key information said in passing. Up to 93% of our communication is nonverbal, so body language plays an important role in the workplace as it can enhance relationships, motivate others, and ultimately, improve productivity. Body language is often subtle, so the absence of face-to-face contact can make it even harder to read situations. This lack of opportunity to observe is particularly detrimental to the growth or junior employees and new starters.

From brainstorming ideas in meetings to bonding over coffee breaks, our office relationships can have a positive impact on everything from job satisfaction to learning and using our skills. Even if you work solo, an office space creates opportunities to expand your network as you meet people from other businesses. The high street may struggle to recover from the impact of the second lockdown. Workers aren’t going to their favourite coffee shop on their commute, we can’t go to the pub or get our hair cut so pubs, restaurants and hairdressers all need customers to keep trading– remote working might mean local independents flounder. If people are no longer occupying offices, they aren’t occupying the surrounding amenities, which will be forced to close. A loss of jobs in turn means a loss of disposable income, further damaging the economy.

4)    Productivity

A pile of washing up or the lure of the fridge can prove far more distracting and time-consuming than a talkative colleague. There is so much value in having lunch with your colleagues – without realising it you come up with a solution to a problem within the business or learn something new about a process. Steve Jobs famously opposed remote working, saying, “Creativity comes from spontaneous meetings, from random discussions. You run into someone, you ask what they’re doing, you say ‘Wow,’ and soon you’re cooking up all sorts of ideas.”

5)    Mental Health

Mental and physical health is essential to wellbeing and working from home can have negative effects on both. Physically, it’s easy to miss the spin class you would normally go to on your way home and sitting at a desk all day and doing under 2,000 steps a day is becoming the norm. With another lockdown, Dave Antrobus believes that poor posture and bad diets are becoming ingrained. From a mental health perspective, burnout and isolation are causes for concern. Remote employees often feel compelled to work longer hours than if they were in the office, with the pressure to appear “busy” causing increased anxiety. In October, Apple released its latest suite of widely anticipated devices: four variations of the new iPhone 12 – each supporting 5G networks – and its brand new HomePod Mini. Alongside the release of the newest iPhones, Apple has collaborated with network providers to ensure consistent 5G coverage around the world. As UK providers continue to roll out network infrastructures, experts conclude that 5G networks will soon be quicker and more reliable than the existing 4G technology throughout the UK – and the impressive coverage in major towns and cities is already beginning to prove this.

Introducing 5G Coverage for Apple Devices

Over the last ten years, 4G has paved the way for Apple’s market-defining innovations and industry-leading models. A decade later, 5G now promises a magnitude of new opportunities and benefits, especially in terms of latency and penetration in densely populated areas. Thanks to this newest generation of technology, the iPhone 12 range can load up to 3.5 Gbps in areas with 5G coverage, in ideal conditions.

‘5G will bring a new level of performance for downloads and uploads, higher-quality video streaming, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity, and so much more,’ says Tim Cook, Apple’s Chief Executive. ‘5G networks are more advanced with lower latency and less network congestion. So, you can get higher network speeds even in densely populated areas. 5G even helps to protect your privacy and security, since you won’t need to connect to unknown, unsecured public WiFi hotspots as often.’

‘5G will spearhead a new faster and more convenient way of staying connected to the internet. With improved penetration into buildings and faster speeds, you will no longer need to scramble to find a Wifi password in an office or coffee shop, just to enjoy slow speeds where you can’t see your emails.’ adds Dave Antrobus.

5G Latency

Latency measures the time required for a signal to travel from a source to its receiver and back again. 5G has much lower latency than 4G, meaning that a phone on a 5G network will respond to a user’s actions in a fraction of the time that the same phone on a 4G network will. As 5G data transmission takes less than five milliseconds, the possibilities for developments in gaming, augmented, and virtual reality applications are now endless.

Reduced latency also supports a host of applications that leverage artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT). For example, as 5G latency is faster than human visual processing, we can now control devices remotely in near-real-time. As a result, 5G could be the key to remote surgery in the UK. The first remote operation using 5G technology took place in 2019 in Fujian, China, where a doctor removed a laboratory-test animal’s liver by remotely controlling robotic arms over a 5G connection. It’s only a matter of time before similar procedures will be possible in the UK. Looking further ahead, 5G will also inform the development of self-driving cars, fully immersive virtual-reality worlds, and new designs of hypersonic weapons.

5G Speed

Each wireless network generation has boasted an impressive improvement in speed, and 5G is no different. We can expect phones on 5G networks to respond up to 100 times faster than phones on 4G networks. As a result, it is now possible to download a full-length HD film in just seconds. Dave explains that as carriers continue to roll out the networks, 5G could soon become faster than most people’s internet and could replace broadband in the future. Dave has already tested this in Manchester,  receiving around 300MB/s in the city centre while using his iPhone 12 Pro.

5G Capacity

5G networks have the potential to deliver up to 1000 times more capacity than 4G networks, meaning that 5G can accommodate simultaneous use of thousands of devices in densely populated areas. With such impressive capacity, we can expect technology to become even more efficient, minimising wait times in supply chain manufacturing processes and leading to huge developments in smart home applications, such as improved security and accessible energy and water consumption measurements.

5G Bandwidth (News – Alert)

Thanks to 5G’s blend of increased speed and network capacity, these networks can transmit much larger amounts of data than 4G networks. This increased bandwidth enables 5G’s great penetration in hard-to-reach places. Even the busiest arenas, stadiums, and conference centres will now be able to offer accessible network coverage, even when filled close to capacity with smart-device users. Meanwhile, large businesses will be able to collect huge volumes of data from customers and suppliers to instantly convert into actionable knowledge and better understand consumer needs.

5G Coverage in the UK

Apple collaborates with carrier partners to deliver consistent 5G coverage around the world. These carrier partners include AT&T, AU, Bell, China Mobile (News – Alert), China Telecom, T Mobile, EE, Docomo, Orange, Softbank, T, Verizon, and Vodafone. Thanks to some of these partnerships, 5G networks have been available in some of the UK’s biggest cities since the end of May 2019. As network providers gradually expand 5G coverage, increasing numbers of users will benefit from the latest advancement in internet mobile connectivity.

Unlike 4G and previous data networks, 5G requires a higher density of masts to cover an area because its signals project over smaller geographical ranges. As the UK gradually rolls out 5G networks, the infrastructure will soon support incredibly high-speed data rates of up to 10 Gbps in more towns and cities, accommodating one-million devices for every square kilometre.

In the UK, EE currently provides the widest 5G coverage. The network provider has rolled out coverage in 112 towns and cities over the last year and will realise the full potential of 5G over the next few years, redefining the ways that we work, travel, socialise, and pay for goods and services. In particular, as the speed of wireless data transmission continues to accelerate, we will see booking systems for takeaways, accommodation, and supermarket deliveries skyrocket yet further. Doctors will be able to remotely diagnose patients. Environmental organisations will be able to accurately measure crop health, chemical levels, pest presence, air quality, and traffic patterns in real-time.

In short, 5G will remould the ways that we interact with our homes, societies, and outdoor environments.

The iPhone 12 Range

Apple’s four latest iPhones include the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. On top of this, Apple’s new photography function Apple ProRAW blends Apple’s machine-learning photography capabilities with the flexibility of RAW image files, enabling ultra-high-quality photographs. The iPhone Pro models use Super Retina XDR displays, which comprise almost 3.5 million pixels. Plus, the camera features an A14 bionic chip, which enables users to set the camera to night mode when using the front-facing feature. Thanks to the A14 bionic chip and 5G support, users can also play video games that they could previously only play on desktop computers on their phones.

Furthermore, Apple has updated its charging system for its newest releases. Users can wirelessly charge the iPhone 12 using a MagSafe magnetic power connector.

HomePod Mini

Alongside the four iPhone 12 models, Apple has also launched the new HomePod Mini smart speaker. Apple has designed the newest edition of the HomePod range specifically for high-level acoustic performance. The Mini’s round design delivers 360° sound to fill a room, despite its small size. The smart speaker works as a standalone or users can place two HomePod Minis in the same room, and they will automatically convert into left-right stereo speakers. Users can also connect the HomePod Mini with their iPhones to read out messages and connect audio media.

HomePod combines precise, high-fidelity sound with Siri’s intelligence so that consumers can easily discover and interact with media at home. Apple designed the HomePod Mini smart speaker and associated smart home features for customers who are now spending more time at home due to limitations imposed by coronavirus. The HomePod Mini also recognises different users’ voices to read out tailored information based on the person, such as calendar dates and favourite music.
